A New Ghost Cell/Level Set Method for Moving Boundary Problems: Application to Tumor Growth

چکیده
In this paper, we present a ghost cell/level set method for the evolution of interfaces whose normal velocity depend upon the solutions of linear and nonlinear quasi-steady reaction-diffusion equations with curvature-dependent boundary conditions. Our technique includes a ghost cell method that accurately discretizes normal derivative jump boundary conditions without smearing jumps in the tangential derivative; a new iterative method for solving linear and nonlinear quasi-steady reaction-diffusion equations; an adaptive discretization to compute the curvature and normal vectors; and a new discrete approximation to the Heaviside function. We present numerical examples that demonstrate better than 1.5-order convergence for problems where traditional ghost cell methods either fail to converge or attain at best sub-linear accuracy. We apply our techniques to a model of tumor growth in complex, heterogeneous tissues that consists of a nonlinear nutrient equation and a pressure equation with geometry-dependent jump boundary conditions. We simulate the growth of glioblastoma (an aggressive brain tumor) into a large, 1 cm square of brain tissue that includes heterogeneous nutrient delivery and varied biomechanical characteristics (white matter, gray matter, cerebrospinal fluid, and bone), and we observe growth morphologies that are highly dependent upon the variations of the tissue characteristics-an effect observed in real tumor growth.

Evolving interfaces via gradients of geometry-dependent interior Poisson problems: application to tumor growth
We develop an algorithm for the evolution of interfaces whose normal velocity is given by the normal derivative of a solution to an interior Poisson equation with curvature-dependent boundary conditions. We improve upon existing techniques and develop new finite difference, ghost fluid/level set methods to attain full second-order accuracy for the first time in the context of a fully coupled, n...
متن کاملA Sharp Interface Method for Two-Phase Flows Interacting with Moving Bodies
In this paper, we present a combined immersed-boundary/ghost-fluid sharp interface method for the simulations of three-dimensional two-phase flows interacting with moving bodies on fixed Cartesian grids. This work is based on a sharp interface immersed boundary method for fluid flows interacting with moving bodies and a level set based ghost fluid method (GFM) for two-phase interface treatment....
متن کاملAn immersed-boundary method for compressible viscous flow and its application in gas-kinetic BGK scheme
An immersed-boundary (IB) method is proposed and applied in the gas-kinetic BGK scheme to simulate incompressible/compressible viscous flow with stationary/moving boundary. In present method the ghost-cell technique is adopted to fulfill the boundary condition on the immersed boundary. A novel idea “local boundary determination” is put forward to identify the ghost cells, each of which may have...
متن کاملA Boundary Meshless Method for Neumann Problem
Boundary integral equations (BIE) are reformulations of boundary value problems for partial differential equations. There is a plethora of research on numerical methods for all types of these equations such as solving by discretization which includes numerical integration. In this paper, the Neumann problem is reformulated to a BIE, and then moving least squares as a meshless method is describe...
متن کاملNumerical method for a moving solid object in flows.
We propose a numerical method for dealing with a moving solid body that interacts with a complex liquid surface. The method is based on the level set method, the CIP method, and the ghost fluid method. The validity of the method was shown by applying it to Poiseuille and Couette flow problems. The method can precisely capture the boundary layer as well as a moving solid object.
